The team became my life in 3 months. The girls on the team became my sisters and the practices became my family parties. As a team, we laughed, cried and celebrated together. I expected to lose this connection with the team when the season ended but we have remained close. We continue to eat together and go out together even without the season holding us together. We seem to find lots of time and many reasons to see each other daily. This bond has reassured me of my commitment and continuing participation in the soccer team.
I probably would not have appreciated or seen my growth with the team without this class. It gave me the opportunity to reflect and look into events and my experiences with the team. Many times I have joined communities and grown in them without noticing how the community has shaped me. This class, ENG 101, has taught me how to recognize and appreciate the communities I participate in.
I learned how to communicate with participants in my class about topics that interest other classmates. I was able to discuss and work on my narratives with Emily Matis, a classmate, which helped my writing. Emily and I were able to both discuss the University Athletic Association (UAA) in our final projects and we were able to review and edit each other’s work. This peer review helped to make sure that my writing was clear and concise. Emily and I spent time collecting information about the UAA and discussing our communities outside of class.
I learned that there is nothing better than having a team of people who care about you when you leave home and start a new chapter in your life, college. I also learned that there are communities everywhere in my life and I just need to start noticing and appreciating each community for its individuality.
